Description:

The proposed development at Knockmore consists of 15 no. wind turbines, 65 metre hub height and 90 metre rotor diameter, which will be situated on the eastern slopes of Knockmore Hill. The windfarm is currently in Planning stage.

The Mayo Energy Agency commissioned a study into the creation of a renewable energy facility on Achill Island, and this study identified Knockmore as a suitable site, particularly given that it was not the subject of any environmental designations.

The proposed farm will also have a community aspect. A percentage of the revenues from the proposed farm will be held in trust for the local community and all revenues from the farm will be distributed in the local area to promote infrastructure, enterprise and employment for the benefit of the local community.

Murray & Associates were involved in the project from the outset, and the Practice handled all physical planning aspects of the windfarm development. A key factor in the development was the design of the siting layout for the turbines. The use and effects of different colours was also considered. The Practice also compiled and directed the EIS and visualisation studies.
