Grand Canal Harbour

The implementation and delivery of the permitted scheme for Grand Canal Harbour was undertaken over the period 2021-2025. The Grand Canal Harbour area was previously a canal basin for the loading of goods on to barges coming in and out of the city. The brief in this instance was to deliver the vision for the scheme in terms of public and private open space.

One of the key elements of the scheme was delivering the water elements as reflecting pools. These are designed to be drained down to allow for events and functions to take place on the pavement, and they can then be refilled. In this way the space has a number of additional functional uses. We worked closely with the water element contractor to achieve a usable and functional design which met the design vision for the space.

The roof terraces have a dual function. They are intended to promote biodiversity and also be functional private recreational spaces for the residents of the scheme. Elements of the scheme were amended to fully realise the potential of the rooftop areas. They now serve as areas for biodiversity and private amenity.
